Who likes hops?

This post is only related to bikes in the sense that hoppy beer is great, just as bikes are great.

I just wanted to share the news that our first harvest of hops this season happened yesterday – I was actually forced to pick the cones because the sheer weight of the hops broke the line that was stringing this particular vine up to our eaves!

This strain is “Zeus” and it is robust, healthy and will make a nice hoppy IPA for us this fall. I don’t do the brewing myself, but I supply the hops to a friend who makes some fantastic recipes.

This is one of two major vines on this rhizome, I’d say it represents about a third of the 2012 harvest from this plant alone. We also have a Nugget vine and a Santium vine which will not be ready for harvest for a few weeks still.

In other news, we are slowly getting some used bikes built up but have been too busy to post them on the website. If you are looking for a used bike, drop in and see what we have.

Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, where did you get the hop bines from?

My first vine was Nugget and it was available potted from Garden Gallery on Wilson Street toward Ancaster.

The more interesting varieties were purchased as rhizomes online. This is the second growing season for my rhizomes and the third season for the Nugget (but I transplanted it after year one so it lost some of its vigour)

  • wow! as a home brewer, i would be interested in buying some of your harvest for a few batches :)
